The fall of the Roman Empire is a mythical and founding event marking the passage from antiquity to the Middle Ages. All of a sudden, Europe would have gone from a glorious Roman Empire where citizens in togas frequent beautiful marble buildings while the most powerful army in the world fights in skirts with… pure illiterate farmers living in huts under the domination of brutal lords and fundamentalist priests.
We often explain this change in a simplistic way: all that would be because of the barbarian invasions! We come back together on what it really is.
